Health for All & Communicable Disease Control

Our public health programs focus on high-burden diseases in hard-to-reach rural communities. In partnership with TASO, the Ministry of Health, and local health directorates, we deploy evidence-based interventions:

check_circle Malaria Vector Control: Community education, household bed-net inspections, and school-based smart fever reporting in Arua City's highest-burden sub-county (Dadamu).
check_circle Hepatitis B & Infectious Disease Awareness: Organizing community testing drives and public health education to reduce chronic liver morbidity.
check_circle Health Center Linkages: Collaborating with primary facilities like Riki Health Center III to improve patient triage, personal protective equipment compliance, and referral pathways.

Youth Skilling, Gender Inclusion & Refugee Resilience

The West Nile region hosts significant refugee populations, including Bidi Bidi, one of the largest settlements in Africa. IHDI provides vocational skilling and socio-economic empowerment to bridge humanitarian relief with durable self-reliance:

check_circle Vocational Training for Refugee Youths: Hands-on apprenticeships in tailoring, garment making, metal fabrication, carpentry, and electrical wiring.
check_circle Refugee Girls & Young Women Skilling: Focused entrepreneurship cohorts designed to prevent gender-based vulnerability and early marriages.
check_circle Business Mentorship & Seed Toolkits: Providing graduates with toolkits to launch local micro-enterprises and artisan cooperatives.

Education & School Health Partnerships

Health and education reinforce each other. Ill health causes prolonged absenteeism and high dropout rates in rural schools. IHDI implements school-based preventive models:

check_circle Malaria Smart Schools: Training primary school teachers and headteachers (including at Riki Primary School) to maintain fever registers and early case management.
check_circle Pupil Health Clubs: Equipping children with health hygiene messages that they take back into their families and neighborhood clusters.
check_circle Girl-Child Retention & Menstrual Hygiene: Distributing dignity kits, sanitary supplies, and breaking taboos to ensure uninterrupted school attendance.

Livelihoods, Agribusiness & Orphan/Widow Support

Through our Labour of Love community action teams, IHDI provides direct livelihood support to child-headed households, widows, and vulnerable farming families across rural Arua:

Seedling Nursery Beds

Propagation of high-grade vegetable and fruit seedlings for community household gardens.

Mixed Farming Demonstrations

Training smallholders in soil fertility, crop rotation, and sustainable poultry integration.

Biofortified Crops

Promoting vitamin-A rich orange fleshed sweet potatoes and drought-tolerant cassava.

Agroforestry & Reforestation

Planting multi-purpose indigenous trees to reverse deforestation and stabilize soils.
